Takai’s Tone
A reverence to the work of Tom Jobim
Co-produced with Roberto Menescal and Marcos Valle, the album "Tom da Takai" was built from the lesser-known but no less affectionate repertoire of Tom Jobim for Fernanda Takai. The cover synthesizes the encounter of a bird and a carp in allusion to an encounter of Jobim's art with Takai's voice. The loose and simple stroke results in a light and synthetic drawing aesthetic, in direct semiotic relation with bossa nova.
Like Takai, the carp has a very strong relationship with Eastern cultures, especially with Japan. It represents courage and perseverance, since it is a cold-water fish that swims against the current. The bird is the animal figure chosen to metaphorize the figure of Tom, in reference also to illustrations by the singer himself.
The typographic composition is another important element for the graphic project. Historically, in bossa nova albums, it plays a fundamental role in the construction of a minimalist and sophisticated language. In the project, the typography is clean and gains strength in the composition and the contrast of its red with the pastel background.
