Poster FIFA 2014
The modern stroke with Belo Horizonte's symbol in a world event
In 2014, Belo Horizonte was one of the host cities of the FIFA World Cup, held in Brazil. To create the official poster of the capital for the event, we started from the idea of Belo Horizonte as a place of encounters, welcoming, and hospitality, seeking inspiration in one of the city's greatest tourist and artistic icons: the Church of São Francisco de Assis.
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the work is part of the architectural complex of Pampulha, which is an UNESCO heritage site and where the Mineirão Stadium is located. The elements of Cândido Portinari's panel, which decorate the exterior of the church, come to life to celebrate football. They are hand-illustrated drawings of birds and plants that form in overlays and create the pentagons of a ball, in a reference to the sport.
The blue tones of the poster also refer to the identity of Niemeyer's Church. The silhouette of the Mineirão Stadium, in the background of the composition, is a direct representation of the stage for the World Cup games in Minas Gerais.
